How the Software Works

The abbreviation “CNC” in CNC routers represents “computer numerical control.” The references a computer controller that reads coded instructions causing the positioning of a machining tool that does the actual work (G-code). This is different than other codes such as M-codes which manage the machine but do not directly affect the movement of the parts of the machine that perform the drilling and cutting. The machining tool is an electrical mechanical device that that is used to fabricate components by selectively removing material from a larger piece of material. A single line in the G-code will direct the machine to do one of many actions.

You can purchases machines that are preloaded with the software or you can obtain software separately that gives you more advanced functionality or works more cooperatively with your CAD program or operating system. Using the CNC software is another way you can save time and increase your productivity. You can input your program into a single platform as opposed to requiring several programs to create a pattern. You write your code in one location using one format. This prevents the loss of data that can happen when you transfer it from one program to another. You can purchase software for three dimensional patterns that are used in signs and wall hangings. CNC routers software lets you import images from other sources and typically accepts .gif and .jpg files. This is especially useful when you have a customer with a digital image or logo they want reproduced.
